Handling

Storing research peptides: temperature, light and shelf life

· 5 min read

Storage is the least glamorous variable in peptide research and one of the most common explanations for irreproducible results. This is laboratory handling guidance for research-use-only material.

Lyophilised material

In powder form, most peptides are comparatively stable. Sealed vials held at -20 °C, away from light and moisture, remain usable across long project timelines when the seal is intact.

Short transit periods at ambient temperature are ordinarily tolerated by lyophilised material, which is why powders travel with insulation rather than active refrigeration.

Reconstituted solutions

  • Hold at 2-8 °C and use within the window appropriate to your diluent.
  • Protect from light — amber vials or foil wrapping for photosensitive sequences.
  • Aliquot into single-use volumes before freezing rather than thawing a master stock repeatedly.
  • Never store solutions in the freezer door, where temperature cycles most.

Sequences that need extra care

Copper-complexed peptides such as GHK-Cu are pH-sensitive and are usually prepared fresh for formulation work. Cysteine-containing sequences are prone to oxidation and benefit from minimal headspace and prompt use.

Where a compound page or certificate of analysis lists specific handling notes, those take precedence over general guidance.

Recognising degradation

  • Powder that has clumped, discoloured or gone tacky, indicating moisture ingress.
  • Solutions that turn cloudy, develop strands, or throw a precipitate.
  • Inconsistent assay responses from a stock that previously performed predictably.

Documentation

Record the lot number, receipt date, reconstitution date and diluent for every vial. When a result looks anomalous, that log is what lets you separate a storage problem from a biological one — and lets you re-check the batch against its certificate of analysis.

Frequently asked

Does a peptide need to arrive cold to be usable?

Lyophilised powders are stable through normal transit at ambient temperature. What matters is that the material goes into a -20 °C freezer promptly on arrival and stays sealed until use.
